Spreading Joy Through Service
We thank you for stopping by ! We want to educate you on the crisis of homeless youth.
550,000 unaccompanied, single youth and young adults under the age of 24 experience homelessness. Approximately 380,000 of that total are under the age of 18. Accurately counting homeless children and youth is particularly difficult. The National Alliance to End Homelessness explains, “Homeless youth are less likely to spend time in the same places as homeless people who are in an older age range. They are often less willing to disclose that they’re experiencing homelessness or may not even identify as homeless. They also may work harder to try to blend in with peers who aren’t homeless. We assist any and all homeless youth, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identification. ”110,000 LGBTQ youth in the U.S. are homeless. This is one of the most vulnerable homeless populations. A substantial number of young people who identify as LGBTQ say that they live in a community that is not accepting of LGBTQ people. In fact, LGBTQ youths make up 20% of runaway kids across the country. Family rejection, abuse, and neglect are major reasons LGBTQ youth end up on the streets. Additionally, homeless LGBTQ youth are substantially more likely than heterosexual homeless youth to be victims of sexual assault and abuse. LGBTQ homeless youth are twice as likely to commit suicide compared to heterosexual homeless youth.
Project Backpack began in 2013, in New Orleans Louisiana. That first year we provided 42 backpacks filled with much needed necessities to kids living on the streets. In 2018 we estimate that number to be 400+. Not only are we providing backpacks to kids living on the streets, but also backpacks filled with school supplies to kids that are living in missions and other alternative housing. We are now operating in 3 cities.
HELPING BOYS BECOME MEN
As most of you know, my daughter, Amber, was murdered by two members of the gang, "Crips". It was all part of a gang initiation to perform a carjacking. They chose my daughter, in the the driveway of our home, then in Atlanta. A 21 year old was initiating a 14 year old into the gang. Without going into painful details, things went horribly wrong and my daughter ended up leaving this world. The 14 year old hung himself in prison, before trial...the 21 year old is serving a life sentence. After many years of contemplation, I have decided to start another non-profit aimed at helping kids avoid the gang life before it even starts for them. I will be establishing a mentoring program for at risk youth in New Orleans and Atlanta. My daughters murder has resulted in several deaths, besides her own, and the ruination of several families. Plus, she wanted to be a social worker, so I can only imagine how many lives are in chaos and sadness today, because she was not there to help them. The non profit is called "Helping Boys Become Men". I hope that Amber will be proud. Please send prayers and positive energy that this endeavor will help turn around lives, before they are lost forever. Many thanks and much love.
